Stanthorpe's Market in the Mountains.
Market in the Mountains was brought into being to promote local arts and crafts and to provide a showcase for the many talented people who live on Queensland’s Granite Belt. It was also hoped that this Market could provide the base from which a stallholder could launch a small business.
We coined the slogan “Make it, bake it, sew it or grow it” to ensure that all products put before the public were made by the stallholder and were the best quality available. This has proved to be an enduring magnet for visitors to return time and time again as they know they will find QUALITY on the Granite Belt.
Our aim is to provide support for the local Community and as a not-for-profit organisation, we try to donate funds, when available, to local charities and youth groups. A free stallsite is offered at each Market to a local charity or youth group for them to inform visitors of their aims and contributions to society. They usually have a raffle, drawn on the day, to help boost funds. This charity is always the leading article in our Newsletter which is handed out at each Market. Stanthorpe Crafters & Hobbyists Assn. Inc. also provides prize money and gift vouchers for the winners of many craft and cooking sections at our local agricultural Show.
We commissioned two surveys to provide us with information which would help us to improve our Market and to cater for the needs of visitors. The high point of our findings was that 85% of all visitors are our local people! We must be doing something right but also our local community proved to us just how loyal they are.
